The Garden of the Rose - St Albans
IS CLOSED FOR REDEVELOPMENT Please read this letter from our President for more information. Dear Rose Lovers You will by now have received a letter by snail post from me, explaining that for this summer only, the Rose Gardens will be closed for complete re-design and refurbishment. As you will have read in the last issue of 'The Rose' we have sold approximately half of our land, together with the house, to another charity organization called Butterfly World.?The sale has released funds previously tied-up in property. This enables the Society, not only to rebuild the gardens, which over recent years we have not been able to maintain to the best advantage to either roses or members.?It also allows us to move forward in a way that will give members a much more comprehensive and interesting membership package. I, for one, am very disappointed that the gardens are going to have to be closed during my second year as President, but this disappointment is easily outweighed by the knowledge that what is happening to the Society and its gardens which will be a landmark in our affairs and ensure a very rosy future. At the same time the trials of new varieties are also secured. Could I please appeal to you all as your President to stick with us until our plans come to fruition. The Society has had several difficult years and your new Board of Trustees are working very hard to bring it back to where we should be, the best Rose Society in the World. I ask you not only to stay with us yourselves but please recruit as many new members as you can to join us in the greater interest and love of the rose. Yours in roses. Peter Beales President |
