15 January 2007 – Gift to Rose Society prompts call green fingered

A generous gift has presented Chiswell Green-based Royal National Rose Society with a challenge that it hopes the people of St Albans will rise to.

Last week Manchester-based bulb wholesaler Parkers presented the Society with 20,000 daffodil bulbs. But with its four gardeners already busy planting out new roses and other companion plants, the Society is inviting anybody who can lend a hand to come to the Rose Society Gardens next Tuesday (23 January) and plant some daffs under the expert guidance of head gardener Neil Oakman.

As a bonus, volunteers will get a sneak preview of the new layout of the Society Gardens, designed by Michael Balston, something the general public won't see until summer.

To avoid a crush, potential volunteers should contact the Society office on 01727 850 461 to see when would be best to come.

If the weather is too bad to permit planting – or if there are still bulbs to plant at the end of the day - a second planting day will be arranged later in the week and details placed on the Society website.

Volunteers should bear in mind that, because the Gardens are out of season, there are no refreshment facilities, so it would be prudent to bring a flask of something hot.
