Roses of Special Merit
The Royal National Rose Society and the British Rose Growers Association.
The Roses of Special Merit Scheme
Both organizations have long felt that choosing roses has become a quite unnecessarily difficult matter, especially for the young or inexperienced gardener. There are a bewildering number of varieties on the market and many find all the current descriptive terminology off-putting.
The Society has simply selected five typical garden situations and suggests a good selection of roses, which are suitable for these places. The rose descriptions are given in essential detail only and all are considered to be good quality, disease-resistant garden plants. All are widely available.
Roses of Special Merit can be found at garden centres, rose nurseries and in mail order catalogues where they will be marked with the special logo as above.
The RNRS and the BRGA are dedicated to helping gardeners (especially inexperienced ones) to select good roses for every location in a typical garden situation.
The 1999 list of Roses of Special Merit is as follows.
